Creating Space for Change: Lay’s RePlay Pitch Opens in Lisbon

Lays replay

In Lisbon’s Chelas district, something as simple as a chip bag now carries the power to transform lives. What was once waste has become a place of belonging — a pitch where young people can play safely, grow confidently, and build a future together.

GreenFields, part of TenCate Grass, is proud to have contributed to this transformation as a partner in the Lay’s RePlay project, a global initiative from PepsiCo, the UEFA Foundation for Children, and Common Goal. Together with local partners including Associação CAIS and Fuse, and with the support of football icons Ricardo Quaresma and Tatiana Pinto, the 12th RePlay pitch officially opened to the Lisbon community.

A pitch that promises more than play

“This isn’t just a field,” said André Wolbrink, Director of Sustainability at GreenFields. “It’s a symbol of what can happen when we work across sectors, across borders, with one goal: creating safe, inclusive spaces that empower young people. That’s what makes this project so meaningful.”

Each Lay’s RePlay pitch is built using innovative materials — including yarn made from recycled chip bags — and designed for long-term sustainability. But just as important is what happens on the pitch after it opens. Local organisations will deliver a tailored educational programme focused on life skills, community building and positive social impact.

RePlay as a model for radical collaboration

Lay’s RePlay isn’t just about football. It’s about radical collaboration — between brands, sport, community leaders, and youth — to create something that lasts.

“We believe in designing turf systems that are built to last and built to matter,” added Wolbrink. “That means thinking not only about the materials, but about the people — the young players, the coaches, the community. When we get that right, we’re not just installing a pitch. We’re building opportunity.”

A growing movement, one pitch at a time

With 12 RePlay pitches now installed around the world, the impact is growing. And with each new field, the mission becomes clearer: to ensure every young person, no matter their background, has a place to play, learn, and belong.

We’re grateful to have been part of the Lisbon project, and we’re excited to continue this journey — with PepsiCo, UEFA Foundation for Children, and all our inspiring partners — to bring more safe, sustainable spaces to communities worldwide.
