Western Academy of Beijing Opens Asia’s Largest Artificial Turf Field

WAB Beijing GreenFields-DT

In late 2024, the Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) completed the installation of its new synthetic turf field, covering 18,000 square meters. It is the largest single artificial grass field in China and one of the biggest in Asia. Designed for multi-sport use, including a full-size football and rugby pitch, the surface passed official field tests in September 2024.

A Careful Selection Process

As one of China’s leading international schools, WAB set clear priorities for the project: safety, durability, and environmental performance. After an extensive selection process, GreenFields, a FIFA Preferred Producer, was selected to supply the DT Pro system. The decision was based on the system’s dense fiber composition and structured layout, which offer consistent grip, comfort underfoot, and reliable play characteristics across different sports.

“The school took its time to assess all available options,” said Chen Peng, Regional Director at TenCate Grass Asia. “DT Pro was chosen for its ability to support fast-paced, multi-directional play with a focus on player safety and surface stability. WAB has expressed full satisfaction with the result.”

Delivered Under Pressure

The installation was led by Borun Sports, GreenFields’ local implementation partner. Construction took place during Beijing’s rainy season and was completed within tight deadlines.

“We managed around-the-clock work to meet the start of the new school year,” said Tony Shao, General Manager at Borun Sports. “Despite challenging weather, the team completed the project on time and in line with international standards.”

FIFA and World Rugby Certified

Following installation, the WAB Tiger Field received certification from both FIFA and World Rugby. The pitch is FIFA Quality certified through October 2027 and meets World Rugby Regulation 22 standards until at least September 2026. These recognitions confirm that the surface meets international benchmarks for safety, performance, and resilience.

A Surface That Serves the School

Detlef Jobke, the external project supervisor appointed by the school, reflected on the collaboration:

“This field is important, not just because of its size, but because of what it enables. From the beginning, GreenFields and Borun were reliable and precise. They delivered exactly what we asked for. Our students now have access to a high-quality pitch that meets the demands of everyday school use and international-level sport.”

He added: “You can see the care in the final result. Every line, every joint was done with attention. I would not hesitate to recommend this team to others.”

More Than a Field

The WAB field represents more than a successful construction project. It reflects careful planning, close collaboration, and a shared goal: to create a durable, high-performing pitch that supports the school’s long-term educational and athletic mission.
